Review

“I’m not competent to assess the accuracy of Robert Hazen’s thesis about geological and biological history, but I am competent to judge it a fascinating story, far more alive than you might guess if all you knew was the subject was old dead (?!) rocks.”—Bill McKibben, bestselling author of Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet“With infectious enthusiasm for his subject, Hazen introduces readers to Earth’s defining moments . . . [and] argues that understanding the interplay between Earth’s geological and biological pasts can help us predict and prepare for the future of life on our planet.”—Saron Yitbarek, Discover“Hazen takes us on one of the grandest tours of them all—the 4.5 billion year history of our planet. From the atoms of the crust of the Earth come our bodies, the entire living world, and this exciting book. Read Hazen and you will not see Earth and life in the same way again.” —Neil Shubin, paleontologist and bestselling author of Your Inner Fish“Concise and colourful  . . . Drawing on the latest research and influenced by advances in astrobiology, Hazen takes a radical standpoint . . . to tell the amazing tale of our planet’s intertwined living and non-living spheres.”—Birger Schmitz, Nature“A fascinating new theory on the Earth’s origins written in a sparkling style with many personal touches . . . Hazen offers startling evidence that ‘Earth’s living and nonliving spheres’ have co-evolved over the past four billion years.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred)“Exceptionally readable [and] user-friendly . . . Science junkies and readers interested in the environment will find Hazen’s arguments compelling and his overview of Earth’s tumultuous history captivating.”—Carl Hays, Booklist“Hazen has a gift for explaining science in lay terms, and even readers with a minimal understanding of geology, chemistry, and physics will find this book riveting."—Nancy R. Curtis, Library Journal“Hazen illuminates the origins of Earth and the origins of life [in] a thoroughly accessible book, mixing a variety of scientific disciplines to tell an unforgettable story.”—Publishers Weekly"The Story of Earth is that rare book that can transform the way you see the world. By synthesizing a vast span of time and knowledge into crisp, delightful prose, Hazen really does make our planet into a story, and a compelling one. I was left with a new sense of context for our place in this galactic home.”—Charles Wohlforth, author of The Fate of Nature and The Whale and the Supercomputer

My science training is severely lacking in historical geology, so I've always wanted to read a good textbook on the subject, but textbooks are very dry reading. So, I've always been on the lookout for a well written book about the evolution of the earth in a geological as well as biological context. Robert M. Hazen did just that with this book and he did an excellent job of making the earth a character with a story. From the formation of the solar system to the eventual probable demise of the earth 5 billion years from now, he describes what happened and how we know or believe it happened that way. He lays out the processes and the evidence in a descriptive manner that sparks the imagination. His narrative style is engaging and it's not hard to find yourself wondering what it would have been like to be there as it happened, which is where my only criticism comes in. A reader of this book book would have enormously benefited from photographs, illustrations, maps and artist renderings of what he so vividly describes. If possess a good imagination and have some familiarity with geology, this is a wonderful read. Otherwise, you'll be hard pressed to visualize what Hazen describes, even though he describes it quite well.

A good basic information source for Earth's history. It is comprehensive as a book of its size can be, but hits many of the really important topics. It has given me many insights that I haven't been able to glean from my reading of various science--for layperson--magazines (cf Science News, Astronomy Scientific American) over the years. I finally decided I was tired of not knowing enough about shields and cratons, and how the first landmasses appeared. But the book is much richer than that. This wonderful book deals in part with the development of the planet from the accretion of solar rocks, and even before. It's all a wonderful wild ride. From the Big Bang's production of hydrogen to the development of life here. And a final consideration of the future. I came away with an appreciation of just how recent multicellular creatures are, how recent the oxygen in the atmosphere. Indeed, when people suggest that life was delivered to Earth via comets, I know just how abysmally ignorant they are. But the book also needs to be updated. Since its appearance there have been many new developments. But those do not detract from the relevance of the book as it stands. And to consider that Earth formed within and is only going to be within the habitable zone of its orbiting the sun for perhaps less than the same span that eukaryotes have been here. 500,000,000 years is only a fraction of Earth's history!Cheers!

I can't say enough good things about The Story of Earth. Even though I have a doctorate in biological science from decades ago, I found literally hundreds of ideas and facts I was totally unaware of. For example, I had no idea the moon was formed by "the Big Thwack" with proto-earth of a very early planet called "Thea", nor that the weathering of rock is a far bigger sequesterer of carbon dioxide than are all plants on earth. Nor that there is now a real debate about an abiogenic origin of the earth's petroleum resources. The author does a fantastic job of describing how the evolution of life on earth - going back billions of years, far earlier than the pre-Cambrian - is totally bound up with the evolution of minerals and geology of the planet. Us short-lived humans are actually lucky we are not around long enough to experience most of the repeated cataclysms (asteroid impacts, massive volcanic explosions, continental drift) that rock this planet from the distant past to the distant future. Absolutely fascinating book. (Note: The author could include a bibliography and a glossary on his website, for those who are interested). The only negative I found in the book was at the end he had a discourse about humans colonizing Mars or a moon of Jupiter if the Earth was becoming uninhabitable. I thought that was all absurdly far-fetched, considering the immense -- or most likely impossible -- technological difficulties and the unbelievable cost (like quintillions of dollars). Humans colonizing space is going to remain in the realm of science fiction, I am convinced. I'm afraid we are stuck with the fate of the 3rd planet from the sun, whatever that turns out to be.

Wow! This book, written for a popular audience without talk down to them, was informative as well as interesting. Hazen draws on diverse fields such as astronomy, paleontology, and geophysics to paint a history of the planet we call home. His story telling method includes personal anecdotes smoothly transitioning into scientific evidence to bring those who might be venturing into historical geology for the first time into the fold and, eventually, along for the ride. The only complaint I have is that the lack of illustrations of some of the topics, such as the motion of the protocontinents, would have made this book nearly a required read for any geology course. As it is, any student who had trouble finding a spark of interest in geology would be well advised to read this book to whet their appetite for a deeper understanding. One section which was especially compelling was the section on the future of Earth. In discussing global climate change and its impact, Hazen correctly draws a distinction between saving the Earth and preserving humanity's future. The evidence he puts forth in a stark and no-nonsense manner would seem to bury any argument that humans have "nothing to worry about."

I bought this book to prepare to teach a class on historical geology, and ended up making it a required textbook for the class. For people interested in learning about Earth processes, their cycles and how they can be applied to our lives today, it is a great resource. The author devotes most of the book to describing how Earth history teaches us how the Earth works. He avoids a plodding presentation of geologic eons, eras, and periods; and also avoids an endless discussion of long extinct species. The book includes discussions of recent research and space exploration programs. It is up to date, relevant and interesting.

Nantucket Nights: A NovelBy Elin Hilderbrand

The ties between women can run as deep as the ocean--but so can the secrets.

For 20 years, Kayla, Antoinette and Val have performed their own special summer ritual. Once a year, the old friends put aside their daily, separate lives to drink champagne, swap stories and swim naked under the Nantucket stars. But on one of those bonding nights, one of their trio swims out from the shore and doesn't return. After the surviving friends emerge from their grief, they realize that the repercussions of their loss go far beyond their little circle, and they begin to uncover layers of secrets--and their connections to each other--that were never revealed on the beach. What has made their friendship strong now has the power to destroy--their marriages, families, even themselves, in Elin Hilderbrand's Nantucket Nights.

From Publishers Weekly
Elin Hilderbrand's Nantucket Nights (after The Beach Club) digs into the private lives of three middle-aged women Kayla, Val and Antoinette. For 20 years, they have made annual midnight excursions to the beach to drink champagne, skinny-dip and swap confidences, until one night Antoinette disappears into the surf and doesn't return. Juicy revelations wash up like broken seashells Antoinette had a daughter 20 years ago and a second love-child was on the way and that's just the beginning. Things get more twisted at every turn, with enough lies and betrayals to fuel a whole season of soap operas. It takes a little while for things to get going, but once they do, readers will be hooked. Regional author tour.

From Booklist
Kayla, Antoinette, and Val are a trio whose unlikely friendship was formed 20 years ago when they each rented a room in the same house. Val and Kayla were fast friends, but, despite Kayla's persistence, Antoinette kept her distance--until one night when her desire for a midnight swim inaugurated an annual ritual and cemented their bond. On a remote point on the island of Nantucket, the three women spend one night each Labor Day weekend drinking champagne, eating lobster, skinny-dipping, and baring their souls. One of the secrets revealed during their twentieth get-together launches a chain of events that changes them all forever. Antoinette swims out to sea and never returns, and as they search for her, wondering if she is alive, a complex web of deceptions (both intentional and unintended) begins to unravel. Though the characters' thoughts and actions seem at times a bit unrealistic, the novel is fast paced and suspenseful enough to keep readers interested. A likely candidate for summer-vacation reading. The Mango SeasonBy Amulya Malladi

From the acclaimed author of A Breath of Fresh Air, this beautiful novel takes us to modern India during the height of the summer’s mango season. Heat, passion, and controversy explode as a woman is forced to decide between romance and tradition.

Every young Indian leaving the homeland for the United States is given the following orders by their parents: Don’t eat any cow (It’s still sacred!), don’t go out too much, save (and save, and save) your money, and most important, do not marry a foreigner. Priya Rao left India when she was twenty to study in the U.S., and she’s never been back. Now, seven years later, she’s out of excuses. She has to return and give her family the news: She’s engaged to Nick Collins, a kind, loving American man. It’s going to break their hearts.

Returning to India is an overwhelming experience for Priya. When she was growing up, summer was all about mangoes—ripe, sweet mangoes, bursting with juices that dripped down your chin, hands, and neck. But after years away, she sweats as if she’s never been through an Indian summer before. Everything looks dirtier than she remembered. And things that used to seem natural (a buffalo strolling down a newly laid asphalt road, for example) now feel totally chaotic.

But Priya’s relatives remain the same. Her mother and father insist that it’s time they arranged her marriage to a “nice Indian boy.” Her extended family talks of nothing but marriage—particularly the marriage of her uncle Anand, which still has them reeling. Not only did Anand marry a woman from another Indian state, but he also married for love. Happiness and love are not the point of her grandparents’ or her parents’ union. In her family’s rule book, duty is at the top of the list.

Just as Priya begins to feel she can’t possibly tell her family that she’s engaged to an American, a secret is revealed that leaves her stunned and off-balance. Now she is forced to choose between the love of her family and Nick, the love of her life.

As sharp and intoxicating as sugarcane juice bought fresh from a market cart, The Mango Season is a delightful trip into the heart and soul of both contemporary India and a woman on the edge of a profound life change.

From Publishers Weekly
All the commonplaces of culture clash are on display in this second novel by Malladi (A Breath of Fresh Air), about an Indian woman who hides her engagement to an American man from her traditional Brahmin family. "I had escaped arranged marriage," begins Priya Rao, "by coming to the United States to do a master's in Computer Sciences at Texas A&M, by conveniently finding a job in Silicon Valley, and then by inventing several excuses to not go to India." At 27, having run out of excuses, she returns to her home city of Hyderabad and runs headlong into a dizzying array of parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Tormenting Priya is a secret: Nick, her American fiance. She is afraid to tell anyone about him, fearing she will be disowned, and even agrees to meet an Indian man her parents would like her to marry. Malladi succeeds in giving a vivid sensory impression of the south of India, its foods and climate and customs, but Priya's family falls neatly into stock types: the overbearing mother who wants Priya to marry within her caste; the hip younger brother who represents the next, Westernized generation of Indians; the catty aunt who constantly criticizes her niece. Awkward prose ("lethargy swirling around her like an irritating mosquito") is a distraction, and melodrama takes the place of nuanced plotting-a final twist is particularly egregious.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Teens will identify with the family dynamics portrayed here, but those from foreign cultures will be most affected by this story of love and family. When she returns to India after seven years, Priya Rao, 27, faces the harsh reality of prejudice and culture clash. Besides religion, caste, and financial status, there is the matter of skin color. Lighter is better, and Priya is considered "dark." Hyderabad seems hotter and dirtier, and her family as intractable as ever, but mango season, the frenetic preparation of pickles and other delicacies from the fruit that ripens in southern India's midsummer, is her favorite time. Ma, a "super nag," quickly makes clear that it is time for her daughter to marry a "nice Indian boy," best of all, a Teluga Brahmin from a family they have chosen, though Priya has veto power once the two have met. How can she tell them that she is engaged to her American lover? She has returned for that purpose, and to reconnect with home and family. [...]

From Booklist
At the height of the mango season, 27-year-old Priya returns home to India to the scent of ripened fruits, ready for the family pickling ritual that has been their tradition for as long as she can remember. The sights and scents of India are sensations that Priya has forgotten in her time away, and reacquainting herself with Indian culture soon loses its luster when the family elders begin to question her status as a single woman. They understand that Priya has an illustrious career in California and will probably not stay in India, but they are unaware that she is engaged to an American man who is not Indian and thereby not what they consider a proper husband. While restraint is not part of Priya's rebellious nature, she is stifling her secret for fear of losing the love of family and permanently forging a wedge between the life she dreams of and the legacy of cultural heritage. Malladi submerges the reader in fascinating cultural traditions and rich foods garnished with saucy humor. Elsa Gaztambide

Fela: The Life And Times Of An African Musical Icon

From Publishers Weekly

Raucous, uninhibited and proud, Fela was one of Africa's most intriguing personalities, for his controversial public persona as much as for his music. It's difficult to say for what Fela, born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, was best known: his band publicized Afropop in the 1980s; he repeatedly spoke out against unfair politics in Africa and abroad; his life was abundant with drugs and sex. This exhaustive and objective profile, written by a Yale ethnomusicology professor, examines the Nigerian superstar's life and work from 1938 to his death in 1997. Veal traces Fela's roots to the diverse town of Abeokuta, noting the musical influences left by family and community members there. Following a typically mischievous childhood, Fela pursued an education at Trinity College of Music in London. Soon he and his orchestra were touring the U.S. under the name Nigeria 70, developing the new sound of Afropop. Although the tour was not a popular breakthrough, their subsequent return to Nigeria placed them on the budding African music stage. The book goes on to survey Fela's life at home and worldwide, detailing his imprisonment and physical abuse, his performances, his listeners' reactions and his compositions. Fela covered political corruption, mysticism, frustration with Western views on Africa and other significant subjects in his music, all the while continuing a sexually promiscuous life. Veal has taken on the staggering task of portraying a musician/politician/rebel, and he executes it well. Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Fela was born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, in 1938 into an upper-middle-class family whose members included several well-known educators and religious figures. In 1958, he was sent to London's Trinity College of Music, where he discovered Charlie Parker and John Coltrane and soon formed his own band, Koola Lobitos. Over the years, he developed a jazz-funk fusion style dubbed Afrobeat. Little known in America, Fela recorded dozens of albums and became an international superstar with a social and political conscience. His blistering attacks on Nigeria's corrupt military government landed him in jail, in exile, and in danger of losing his life. Veal (ethnomusicology, Yale) became interested in Fela nearly 20 years ago as a student at Boston's Berklee College of Music. Extensive notes, a comprehensive bibliography, and a discography reflect the book's scholarly credentials. This is an important work on world music's most influential figure since Bob Marley, but most cost-conscious libraries will want to purchase the paperback edition.DDan Bogey, Clearfield Cty. Arrived as described with a few lines highlighted... overall I'm super happy and excited to read this great perspective on Fela, through the lens of the Ethnomusicologist Michael Veal!!!

This book contains a lot of interesting information concerning Fela Kuti(family background, historical, cultural and political environment) but sometimes I had the distinct feeling I was reading a scientific research report. A little more fluency in writing would have made reading more enjoyable

Really not a good biography. Reading the previous reviews, I was expecting much more than this boring, often academic-written book. Some parts of Fela's life are really obscure in this book, just few words about his mother's death (almost nothing!), nothing about characters as Dr Hindu.Even musically, some fundamental masterpieces of Fela are almost not mentioned, see "Confusion", "Coffin for Head of State".Then, the worst thing is the lack of energy in this book - impossible to hear the spirit of Fela, impossible to find an african feeling, anywhere. This is a huge fault."Fela: This Bitch of a Life" remains the best book about Fela and his striking indomable spirit. A complete, objective biography on Fela is something really far from this book.

Fela was a true artist - a man committed to his music, who was intelligent and aware enough to see the disgrace of what his country had become. Despite beatings, arrests and the murder of his mother, he simply refused to remain silent about what was going on in Nigeria and Africa. But if his music was merely okay, he'd be a footnote in music history. As it was, Fela produced some of the most challenging, abrasive, rhythmic and simply awesome music ever produced.I thought that it would be impossible for a book to capture and explain this truly wild soul - but this one did a very good job. Amazingly, it began life as an academic paper. "Amazingly" because it is vibrant, detailed and completely entertaining.

I have mixed feelings about this book and while any book about Fela Kuti is to be welcomed, I don't think this is the definitive one and I do think that Fela's legacy deserves better. There is no doubt that the author is probably the most well informed of all those who have written about this iconic figure, the man who was the most important musician ever to come out of Africa. The research is unquestionably thorough and there is as much detail as any admirer would wish to know. The problem, for me, is that any biographer should be invisible in the work he's writing. Michael Veal, unfortunately, isn't and at times his presence looms larger than the subject of his book.Throughout the narrative there are long sections where the author writes an analysis of Fela and his relationship to the African experience. These passages are written in the most stilted and uncomfortable academic manner. The effect of this is to give the impression that the work is a cut and paste job between outside sources and one of the author's academic theses, an impression which renders the book an uncomfortable mix of good biography and dull collegiate essaying. There were times when reading these sections I wondered just what Fela would have made of this awkward literary style - and I suspect he would have been dismissive and written a song which parodied it.The other fault with the book is the distinct lack of objectivity from the author. That Michael Veal is in awe of the man is not in doubt, but awe is not the best starting place for a biography. The dichotomy of the contrasting aspects of Fela's personality is acknowledged on many occasions, but there is absolutely no attempt to analyse the negative aspects of his character. There is no examination of how Fela's stance in representing the poor and downtrodden contrasts with his ill treatment of his band members, there is no analysis of how, later in life such a forceful personality came under the influence of such an obvious charlatan as Dr Hindu and there is no mention, whatsoever, of the violence and brutality meted out by Fela's own people to those who lived in his commune. Details of which are well documented by other authors and numerous journalists. A biography should look at all aspects of the subject's life and this one fails the reader with excessive bias and a lack of balance.Michael Veal's involvement in maintaining interest in Fela and his music is to be welcomed. His active support in the ten years since the death of this icon and his involvement in facilitating the current availability of much of Fela's early, and more obscure work, is nothing short of admirable. Perhaps the final step would be a wholesale edit of this biography to produce a balanced and more readable work. Then, perhaps, we would have the definitive story of Fela Kuti.

Jerusalem Under Siege: The Collapse of the Jewish State, 66-70 C.E. (Brill's Series in Jewish Studies)By Jonathan J. Price

An internal history of the four tragic years of the Jewish rebellion, which began with militant optimism in the year 66 and ended with the destruction of the Temple and city of Jerusalem four years later. The main theme is internal collapse: from the decades before the war, when deepening factionalism throughout Jewish society contributed to the ultimate outbreak of revolution, to the Temple meeting of 66, when an alliance among competing factions was insecurely riveted together and an "army" with conflicting enthusiasms was formed; from the toppling of the first regime in 67/81, to the disintegration of the second regime from 68 to 70; and from the siege, during which the famine fell on different segments of the population with sadly unequal weight, to desertion, the patterns of which provide a negative image of the constantly shifting political fortunes of revolutionary partners. Classical, rabbinic, archaeological and numismatic evidence is brought to bear on a new interpretation of Josephus' "Bellum Judaicum"
