A professional musician since the age of ten, Laurie has toured throughout the US, in Canada, and in Ireland. She plays selections from around the world, from historical times, as well as compositions of her own. "The richness of various cultures' musical styles offers endless ways to express what I play. Whether it's Celtic, South American, Scandinavian, Israeli, Ukranian... there is something new in each tradition." Through her playing, the double-strung harp has emerged as an exciting new sound in the world of harps. She was instrumental in designing the modern double-strung harp which has become popular in recent years among harpers. Two rows of strings played at the same time make this instrument sound like a duet of two harps. She has recorded eleven albums of harp music, authored five books, and made five instructional videos. Christopher Alexander is a builder, craftsman, general contractor, architect, painter, and teacher. He taught from 1963 to 2002 as Professor of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and is now Professor Emeritus. The Oregon Experiment is one of a series of influential volumes on architecture and social design published by Christopher Alexander and his colleagues in the 1970s. While the most well-known volume in the series, A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, and Construction, develops general principles for the design of social spaces at all scales, The Oregon Experiment applies those principles to a specific case: the campus of the University of Oregon.If you are looking for an example of a specific campus plan, however, you will not find it here. Central to Alexander's approach is the notion that communities should not create fixed master plans, but rather should develop a common pattern language, and then apply it organically, in a piecemeal fashion, as needs arise. The book talks as much about this process of planning as it does about individual construction projects. Whenever a need arises (expansion of a building, addition of a door, creation of a green) people consult their pattern language and build something to suit the space and satisfy the need. Because everyone follows the agreed-upon language, the new parts harmonize with those that already exist (or replace earlier, poorly-designed structures).If you have enjoyed studying Alexander's patterns in A Pattern Language, you will find here a collection of new ones that are specific to a university setting, including "University Population," "University Shape and Diameter," "Departments of 400," "Local Administration," "Classroom Distribution," and about a dozen more. Although he clearly draws on ideas from British universities in many cases, he unaccountably does not include one of the fundamental features of the British model, namely the residential college of 500 (or so) within the larger institution. (Although he does include aspects of this pattern under the heading "Small Student Unions.") As always, Alexander's pattern descriptions are clear, blunt, and thought-provoking.The question that most readers will want to have answered is, "Does all this really work?" When the volume was written, of course, the process was just getting under way, and so we cannot know from this book alone whether everything described was successful or has been sustained over the long term. From what I've seen of campus master planning in public universities, it often turns out in the end to have less to do with creating good educational environments than it does with kowtowing to the local chamber of commerce and lining the pockets of already-rich trustees. But just because something is difficult doesn't mean it shouldn't be made the goal. If Alexander or someone at the University of Oregon were to produce a sequel, "The Oregon Experiment 25 Years On," I'm sure it would meet with a warm reception.

The good news is that this book is a short summary of what most peoplewill find important when they apply patterns either in the field of architectureor in their own field of design. It provides insight into Alexander's theoryof economics--a stance which caused him to be unfavorably labeled as asocialist when these ideas were taking form.Patterns, in this book, are almost a footnote to the broader ideas ofdesign, of economics, and of socially coordinated construction thatform the core of Alexander's exposition here. The economics form acompelling argument for a process of piecemeal growth. Alexander givespractical advice on how to administer the social process, including thecreation of a community pattern board that oversees the introduction ofnew patterns into the community language, and the retirement of oldones. By putting the pattern mantra aside, this book helps the readerget beyond the point where they are looking for patterns in their own rightto provide the answer to every design question, and pushes the readerto think at the level of the foundations.The bad news is that the book takes the reader into a couple of miscues.Alexander would later bitterly recant the role this book accords to thearchitect. Architects should be master builders rather than the font ofdesign ideas. The architecture role emerged in the Oregon Experimentto lend the project an air of conventionality and credibility, a compromisethat kept the project from achieving its goals.Current tidbits of retrospective literature try to make sense of the experiment;some claim it succeeded (in spite of those aspects Alexander felt werewrong-headed) and some claim it failed. Grabow's biography ofAlexander (Christopher Alexander: The Search for a New Paradigm inArchitecture) features some choice words about the miscues in thisexperiment. Taken with the retrospective Grabow brings us, this bookprovides a perspective on patterns that is completely absent from theother books in this series. Some of these, such as the foundations ineconomics, are there for the picking. To reap some of the other insightsrequires study that goes beyond casual reading, but such study isappropriate to the depth of insight it will afford, and you owe it toyourself to explore it. These insights are crucial for making patternswork in a practical way in a social setting.If you want to learn about patterns, and you want to start with anAlexandrian book, I think this is the one you start with. Get the bigpicture first, in the context of the underlying principles, and comeback for the pattern details later in A Pattern Language, and for theartist's artistic exposition of his art in The Timeless Way of Building.

As a software designer and as somebody who lives and works in buildings in cities, I find the ideas in some of Alexander's other books on architecture and design - The Timeless Way of Building and A Pattern Language - very interesting and appealing. They are a brave attempt to point to a more human, community-oriented way of doing things.I had high hopes that The Oregon Experiment would describe a concrete example of whether these ideas worked when they were put into practice. It does nothing of the kind. It describes an interesting thought experiment in participatory design and tries to present this as a vindication of the Pattern Language concepts. But nowhere does it even mention whether the design it describes was ever actually implemented, much less whether it worked from the inhabitants' point of view.It is very easy for a design team to get carried away with what a great design they have on paper. I've done it loads of times. That enthusiasm tells us nothing about whether a design is actually going to be a success.I know Alexander later moved from academia and started trying to put his ideas into practice on actual building projects. A book on his real experiences and how well the original ideas stood up to the cold light of reality would be fascinating and important. The Oregon Experiment isn't that book.

About the Author

ROBERT E. RICKLEFS is Curators' Professor of Biology at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1995. His teaching at Missouri, and previously at the University of Pennsylvania, has included courses in introductory and advanced ecology, biogeography, evolution, and biological statistics. Bob’s research has addressed a broad range of topics in ecology and evolutionary biology, from the adaptive significance of life-history traits of birds, to island biogeography and the community relationships of birds, herbivorous insects, and forest trees. In particular, he has championed the importance of recognizing the impact of large-scale processes on local ecological assemblages of species. Bob has published in numerous journals including Science, Nature, PNAS, Evolution, Ecology, Ecology Letters, and the American Naturalist. His contributions have been recognized by honorary doctorates from the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium), Aarhus University (Denmark), and the University of Burgundy (France). He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of the United States. Bob published the first edition of The Economy of Nature in 1976 and is joined by a coauthor for the first time with this seventh edition.

RICK RELYEA is Director of the Jefferson Project at Lake George for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a groundbreaking partnership between Rensselaer, IBM, and the FUND for Lake George. For the project, Relyea leads a team of Rensselaer scientists, engineers, computer scientists, and other experts who are using the latest in science and technology to understand, predict and enable a resilient ecosystem for nearby Lake George.

From 1999 to 2014, Relyea was at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2005, he was named the Chancellor’s Distinguished Researcher and in 2014 he received the Tina and David Bellet Award for Teaching Excellence. From 2007-2014, Relyea served as the director of the university’s field station, the Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology, where he oversaw a diverse set of ecological field courses and facilitates researchers from around the world.

Rick has taught thousands of undergraduate students in introductory ecology, behavioral ecology, and evolution. His research is recognized throughout the world and has been published in Ecology, Ecology Letters, American Naturalist, PNAS, and other leading ecological journals. The research spans a wide range of ecological and evolutionary topics including animal behavior, sexual selection, ecotoxicology, disease ecology, phenotypic plasticity, community ecology, ecosystem ecology, and landscape ecology. Currently Relyea’s research focuses on aquatic habitats and the diversity of species that live in these ecosystems.

My science training is severely lacking in historical geology, so I've always wanted to read a good textbook on the subject, but textbooks are very dry reading. So, I've always been on the lookout for a well written book about the evolution of the earth in a geological as well as biological context. Robert M. Hazen did just that with this book and he did an excellent job of making the earth a character with a story. From the formation of the solar system to the eventual probable demise of the earth 5 billion years from now, he describes what happened and how we know or believe it happened that way. He lays out the processes and the evidence in a descriptive manner that sparks the imagination. His narrative style is engaging and it's not hard to find yourself wondering what it would have been like to be there as it happened, which is where my only criticism comes in. A reader of this book book would have enormously benefited from photographs, illustrations, maps and artist renderings of what he so vividly describes. If possess a good imagination and have some familiarity with geology, this is a wonderful read. Otherwise, you'll be hard pressed to visualize what Hazen describes, even though he describes it quite well.

A good basic information source for Earth's history. It is comprehensive as a book of its size can be, but hits many of the really important topics. It has given me many insights that I haven't been able to glean from my reading of various science--for layperson--magazines (cf Science News, Astronomy Scientific American) over the years. I finally decided I was tired of not knowing enough about shields and cratons, and how the first landmasses appeared. But the book is much richer than that. This wonderful book deals in part with the development of the planet from the accretion of solar rocks, and even before. It's all a wonderful wild ride. From the Big Bang's production of hydrogen to the development of life here. And a final consideration of the future. I came away with an appreciation of just how recent multicellular creatures are, how recent the oxygen in the atmosphere. Indeed, when people suggest that life was delivered to Earth via comets, I know just how abysmally ignorant they are. But the book also needs to be updated. Since its appearance there have been many new developments. But those do not detract from the relevance of the book as it stands. And to consider that Earth formed within and is only going to be within the habitable zone of its orbiting the sun for perhaps less than the same span that eukaryotes have been here. 500,000,000 years is only a fraction of Earth's history!Cheers!

I can't say enough good things about The Story of Earth. Even though I have a doctorate in biological science from decades ago, I found literally hundreds of ideas and facts I was totally unaware of. For example, I had no idea the moon was formed by "the Big Thwack" with proto-earth of a very early planet called "Thea", nor that the weathering of rock is a far bigger sequesterer of carbon dioxide than are all plants on earth. Nor that there is now a real debate about an abiogenic origin of the earth's petroleum resources. The author does a fantastic job of describing how the evolution of life on earth - going back billions of years, far earlier than the pre-Cambrian - is totally bound up with the evolution of minerals and geology of the planet. Us short-lived humans are actually lucky we are not around long enough to experience most of the repeated cataclysms (asteroid impacts, massive volcanic explosions, continental drift) that rock this planet from the distant past to the distant future. Absolutely fascinating book. (Note: The author could include a bibliography and a glossary on his website, for those who are interested).The only negative I found in the book was at the end he had a discourse about humans colonizing Mars or a moon of Jupiter if the Earth was becoming uninhabitable. I thought that was all absurdly far-fetched, considering the immense -- or most likely impossible -- technological difficulties and the unbelievable cost (like quintillions of dollars). Humans colonizing space is going to remain in the realm of science fiction, I am convinced. I'm afraid we are stuck with the fate of the 3rd planet from the sun, whatever that turns out to be.

Wow! This book, written for a popular audience without talk down to them, was informative as well as interesting. Hazen draws on diverse fields such as astronomy, paleontology, and geophysics to paint a history of the planet we call home. His story telling method includes personal anecdotes smoothly transitioning into scientific evidence to bring those who might be venturing into historical geology for the first time into the fold and, eventually, along for the ride. The only complaint I have is that the lack of illustrations of some of the topics, such as the motion of the protocontinents, would have made this book nearly a required read for any geology course. As it is, any student who had trouble finding a spark of interest in geology would be well advised to read this book to whet their appetite for a deeper understanding. One section which was especially compelling was the section on the future of Earth. In discussing global climate change and its impact, Hazen correctly draws a distinction between saving the Earth and preserving humanity's future. The evidence he puts forth in a stark and no-nonsense manner would seem to bury any argument that humans have "nothing to worry about."

I bought this book to prepare to teach a class on historical geology, and ended up making it a required textbook for the class. For people interested in learning about Earth processes, their cycles and how they can be applied to our lives today, it is a great resource. The author devotes most of the book to describing how Earth history teaches us how the Earth works. He avoids a plodding presentation of geologic eons, eras, and periods; and also avoids an endless discussion of long extinct species. The book includes discussions of recent research and space exploration programs. It is up to date, relevant and interesting.
