Since most commercially effective antifoams are oil based, a chapter is devoted to the entry and spreading behavior of oils and the role of thin film forces in determining that behavior. The book reviews the mode of action of antifoams, including theories of antifoam mechanisms and the role of bridging foam films by particles and oil drops. It also addresses issues related to the effect of antifoam concentration on foam formation by air entrainment and the process of deactivation of mixed oil–particle antifoams during dispersal and foam generation.

For applications where chemical antifoam use is unacceptable, the text examines mechanical means of defoaming, such as the use of rotary devices and ultrasound. The final chapters consider the application of defoaming in radically different contexts including waterborne latex paints and varnishes, machine washing of textiles, gas–oil separation in crude oil production, and cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. Focusing on the basic science of defoaming, this book presents a balanced view, which also addresses the challenges that may arise for these specific defoaming applications.

About the Author

After working for Unilever Research for almost thirty years at Port Sunlight and for a short time at Bangalore, Peter Garrett retired, acquiring visiting professorships at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and briefly at Rice University, Houston, Texas. He has worked on various aspects of interfacial science in a career lasting 40 years. These included the equilibrium and dynamic adsorption behavior of surfactant solutions, solubilization in microemulsions, kinetics of surfactant dissolution and mesophase growth, and of course both the basic science of defoaming and its application especially in the detergents industry.

Professor Garrett is author or coauthor of more than 30 journal articles and is named as inventor on 14 patents, the majority of which concerned the application of antifoam technology. He is also editor of the book Defoaming, Theory and Applications published in 1993. A member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom in 1971.

About the Author
Dr. Signe Beebe is a graduate of the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, and has practiced integrative medicine since 1995. She is certified in veterinary acupuncture, Chinese herbology, Chinese food therapy and veterinary tui-na by the Chi Institute of Chinese Veterinary Medicine and China National Society of TCVM, and has completed the certificate program in Canine Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Beebe owns the Integrative Veterinary Center in Sacramento, California, where she combines conventional medical therapies with Chinese medicine. Dr. Beebe is an assistant editor and advisory board member of the American Journal of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (AJTCVM). She is the co-author of Clinical Handbook of Chinese Veterinary Herbal Medicine, and she regularly lectures at scientific meetings in the US and internationally. Dr. Michael Salewski is a graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College, Oregon at Hindsight Veterinary Care, which treats exclusively using the modalities of TCVM and chiropractic. He co-authored Clinical Handbook of Chinese Veterinary Herbal Medicine and is currently working on a book about equine chiropractic care. John K. Chen, Ph.D., Pharm.D., O.M.D., L.Ac. Dr. John Chen actively participates in education, research and the frontiers of contemporary application of herbal medicine. An editorial board member for the peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (AAMA), Medical Acupuncture, John Chen was also a board member of the 1999 Los Angeles Times Festival Honorary Committee and speaker on Herbal Medicine for the City of Los Angeles First Annual Festival of Health. Appearing in the Discovery Channel 1999 six-hour documentary on alternative and complementary medicine, Dr. Chen served as the expert resource on Traditional Chinese Medicine. He also was a guest speaker on herb-drug interactions in 1998 for the annual USC Bergen Brunswig convention, during which he addressed over 400 pharmacists and medical doctors. Dr. Chen maintains his consulting practice in Southern California. Tina T. Chen, M.S., L.Ac. Tina Chen is an active and respected educator in Oriental medicine and Chinese herbal medicine. In addition to lecturing on TCM Gynecology and Cosmetology across North America through the widely-respected Lotus Institute of Integrative Medicine, Ms. Chen is active on the faculty of South Baylo University of Oriental Medicine and has been an active contributor to professional journals and publications.

About the Author

Andrew Karmen has been a professor in the Sociology Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice since 1978. He has taught courses on a wide range of subjects including general sociology, criminal justice, criminology, crime and justice in New York City, drug abuse, delinquency, social problems, race relations, research methods, statistics, and victimology. He has previously served as the coordinator of both the criminology and criminal justice undergraduate majors, the co-director of the master's program in criminal justice, and as a member of the doctoral faculty. Dr. Karmen has written journal articles and chapters in books on a number of subjects, including drug abuse, police use of deadly force, auto theft, providing defense attorneys to indigents, victims' rights, the victimization of women, and predictions about the plight of crime victims in the future. His investigation of why crime rates rise and fall, NEW YORK MURDER MYSTERY: THE TRUE STORY BEHIND THE CRIME CRASH OF THE 1990s, (NYU Press, paperback edition 2006) unearths statistical evidence that casts doubt on most of the widely held beliefs about the reasons for the dramatic improvement in public safety in New York City. In 2012, Dr. Karmen was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the World Society Of Victimology.

When purchasing a digital version of a textbook you should expect the publisher to put the exact same elements into the digital version as they did with the original physical versions. You will find out that the digital version only has the front cover in color and everything else is black and white. Terrible idea. It wouldn't have been too difficult to put out a digital version in color, just saying. Furthermore, first time user for Amazon kindle (PC) and I find the software awful, there is NO Dark/Night theme option available/built in. I have used other Ebook programs like BryteWave that have an option for Night theme.The only good feed back I can say about this product is the reason I bought the digital version in the first place is because for the price to own it digitally through Amazon is permanent instead of "X" days of access for the same price.

I graduated with a Bachelor's in criminal justice from Loyola University Chicago, which is actually one of the only universities/colleges in the nation to offer a class specifically geared toward the study of victims of crime. When I took the class, this edition was the most current (and required text), so it was very expensive. Even though this book covered the study of victims of crime in great depth, was extremely informational, and gave a whole new perspective of the criminal justice system (CJS), I would buy the most current edition instead because victim advocacy & victim involvement in the CJS is rapidly growing & changing. Therefore, if you want the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend buying the most current edition. If that is not an issue, then I highly recommend this edition.

Other reviewers have largely been unfair--never mind that several reviewers were giving negative ratings to sellers, rather than the book itself.I find Karmen's book to be quite easy to understand. Some have complained it is too "wordy." But I find that the author often provides clarification, subtlety, or nuance, and at no point did I feel that it was a chore to read. The book is comprehensive, which I expect for a semester of study on an entire sub-discipline of criminology. There are plenty of pertinent examples, interesting anecdotes, and the points are made in a familiar and approachable way which is not presumptuous of your previous academic background. This has been one of the better textbooks assigned in my studies.

This was a requirement for school. It did it’s job.

Being a student working toward a Master's Degree in Criminal Psychology, I was in need of this book for a class on Victimology. The book is very thorough and very informative on the different types of victims, their part in helping get the criminals off the street and the aid we can provide to the victim after falling prey to a various criminal acts. The book was delivered as described. I would definitely purchase from this seller again....

It was cheaper (even with shipping) to buy the book here than it was at my school's bookstore. I don't sell textbooks back because you never get nearly what you paid for them, but this one was pretty good regardless. I was able to use it for several other papers in other classes.
