About the Author
Dr. Signe Beebe is a graduate of the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, and has practiced integrative medicine since 1995. She is certified in veterinary acupuncture, Chinese herbology, Chinese food therapy and veterinary tui-na by the Chi Institute of Chinese Veterinary Medicine and China National Society of TCVM, and has completed the certificate program in Canine Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Beebe owns the Integrative Veterinary Center in Sacramento, California, where she combines conventional medical therapies with Chinese medicine. Dr. Beebe is an assistant editor and advisory board member of the American Journal of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (AJTCVM). She is the co-author of Clinical Handbook of Chinese Veterinary Herbal Medicine, and she regularly lectures at scientific meetings in the US and internationally. Dr. Michael Salewski is a graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College, Oregon at Hindsight Veterinary Care, which treats exclusively using the modalities of TCVM and chiropractic. He co-authored Clinical Handbook of Chinese Veterinary Herbal Medicine and is currently working on a book about equine chiropractic care. John K. Chen, Ph.D., Pharm.D., O.M.D., L.Ac. Dr. Chen maintains his consulting practice in Southern California. Tina T. Chen, M.S., L.Ac. Tina Chen is an active and respected educator in Oriental medicine and Chinese herbal medicine. About the Author

Andrew Karmen has been a professor in the Sociology Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice since 1978. He has taught courses on a wide range of subjects including general sociology, criminal justice, criminology, crime and justice in New York City, drug abuse, delinquency, social problems, race relations, research methods, statistics, and victimology. He has previously served as the coordinator of both the criminology and criminal justice undergraduate majors, the co-director of the master's program in criminal justice, and as a member of the doctoral faculty. Dr. Karmen has written journal articles and chapters in books on a number of subjects, including drug abuse, police use of deadly force, auto theft, providing defense attorneys to indigents, victims' rights, the victimization of women, and predictions about the plight of crime victims in the future. His investigation of why crime rates rise and fall, NEW YORK MURDER MYSTERY: THE TRUE STORY BEHIND THE CRIME CRASH OF THE 1990s, (NYU Press, paperback edition 2006) unearths statistical evidence that casts doubt on most of the widely held beliefs about the reasons for the dramatic improvement in public safety in New York City. In 2012, Dr. Karmen was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the World Society Of Victimology.

When purchasing a digital version of a textbook you should expect the publisher to put the exact same elements into the digital version as they did with the original physical versions. You will find out that the digital version only has the front cover in color and everything else is black and white. Terrible idea. It wouldn't have been too difficult to put out a digital version in color, just saying. Furthermore, first time user for Amazon kindle (PC) and I find the software awful, there is NO Dark/Night theme option available/built in. I have used other Ebook programs like BryteWave that have an option for Night theme.The only good feed back I can say about this product is the reason I bought the digital version in the first place is because for the price to own it digitally through Amazon is permanent instead of "X" days of access for the same price.

I graduated with a Bachelor's in criminal justice from Loyola University Chicago, which is actually one of the only universities/colleges in the nation to offer a class specifically geared toward the study of victims of crime. When I took the class, this edition was the most current (and required text), so it was very expensive. Even though this book covered the study of victims of crime in great depth, was extremely informational, and gave a whole new perspective of the criminal justice system (CJS), I would buy the most current edition instead because victim advocacy & victim involvement in the CJS is rapidly growing & changing. Therefore, if you want the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend buying the most current edition. If that is not an issue, then I highly recommend this edition.

Other reviewers have largely been unfair--never mind that several reviewers were giving negative ratings to sellers, rather than the book itself.I find Karmen's book to be quite easy to understand. Some have complained it is too "wordy." But I find that the author often provides clarification, subtlety, or nuance, and at no point did I feel that it was a chore to read. The book is comprehensive, which I expect for a semester of study on an entire sub-discipline of criminology. There are plenty of pertinent examples, interesting anecdotes, and the points are made in a familiar and approachable way which is not presumptuous of your previous academic background. This has been one of the better textbooks assigned in my studies.

This was a requirement for school. It did it’s job.

Being a student working toward a Master's Degree in Criminal Psychology, I was in need of this book for a class on Victimology. The book is very thorough and very informative on the different types of victims, their part in helping get the criminals off the street and the aid we can provide to the victim after falling prey to a various criminal acts. The book was delivered as described. I would definitely purchase from this seller again....

It was cheaper (even with shipping) to buy the book here than it was at my school's bookstore. I don't sell textbooks back because you never get nearly what you paid for them, but this one was pretty good regardless. I was able to use it for several other papers in other classes.

My daughter is dyslexic. She wants to read, so much so that I've spent probably over $500 in books.Sadly she has read only 2 books ever until now. She LOVED Nimona and read it cover to cover in one sitting. She wants the sequel. :( Sadly there isn't one yet, but I am searching for the next and excited about what I can find that's out there for her.She has no interest in audio books though I've tried several times and she has 4 paperbacks she really wanted collecting dust too.This is exciting...my daughter asking and reading!! Whoop Whoop!!

Nimona was first publsihed by Stevenson herself as a webcomic, which eventually grew into this fantastic 256 page graphic novel that earned recognition for being a finalist of the National Book Award! And although the graphic novel takes its name from the it's shapeshifting female protagonist, the story is not *really* about Nimona herself. It isn't really about protagonist Ballister Blackheart, once a hero in training and now the appointed villain, or his "nemesis" and the kingdom's champion Ambrosisus Goldenloin either. Rather, the story of Nimona - at it's heart - is about more than just good versus evil but the difference between good and just, nice and right, and the importance of intention. As Blackheart, now aided by the impulsive and massively destructive Nimona, endeavors to bring the injustices of the Insitution - the kingdom's version of the State Department and Department of Defense - to light and their "antics" soon reveal more than slightly sinister plots at the heart of the kingdom, the novel also reveals to each character the truth about themselves and the secrets held deep in their hearts. This graphic novel, at once whimsical and harrowing, pushes us to do the same and look inward, asking ourselves the question of whether or not we really are the people we *like* to believe we are, and are we ready to take the steps into becoming the people we're truly supposed to be?Slate reviewers said of Nimona, "[It's] [f]unny and vibrant. A kind of deadpan epic," and it's hard to describe the experience of the work in any other way (I also strongly recommend reading the reviews from the New York Times and the UK's the Independent). The never named fantasy realm the characters inhabit, with it's medieval setting and many anachronistic elements, also deepens the sense of...well, magic. The detailed choices of what looks modern by reader's perspective versus what remains in a more medieval style is really interesting, but doesn't distract and makes you want to know more about this world and dive deeper. In the same way, Stevenson tooled around with a number of stylistic options before deciding on the work that we see now, and in reading the bonus pages offered in the graphic novel you can see clearly how that choice impacts the action and movement present in each panel and our investment in the characters generating these actions. Color is another element which was obviously thought out carefully in the creation of Nimona. With Blackheart's and Goldenloin's names not only having color present in their names, but their designs being dark versus light to symbolically reinforce their positions as villain and hero - and then totally reject that cliché and turn it on it's head!Nimona is truly a work of art in both the visual and literary sense. But Lord Blackheart begins to worry that Nimona’s powers may be more dangerous than she lets on.Nimona was recommended to me by a friend from a writing group I manage (who was also nice enough to let me borrow her copy since my book budget is non-existent right now). From the books she had seen me reading, she thought it was a graphic novel I would enjoy. And she was right!Nimona was magical. I was hooked by the first page and read it in about 3 days. I loved Noelle Stevenson’s art style and I loved the overall story. It reminded me a lot of a short story I had written several years ago combined with a one act play I wrote in college. The characters were beautifully created, and I especially loved the spunky Nimona who was there to shake up the traditional ways of the hero and villain. I also loved the potential love story that just poked it’s head out a little bit. I would love to learn more about all of the characters and know what happened to them after this story ended.As someone who doesn’t usually read graphic novels, Nimona was one of those stories that made me want to check out more just like it. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good fantasy/sci fi crossover.

I finished just Nimona. It may be one of the best stories I've ever read. I'm not gonna say best comic book because I think it stands up to novels just as well as it does to other comic books. It's got really likable, well written and thought out characters. The plot is great! It's funny, but serious. There's a solid ending on it that feels hopeful and realistic, completely fitting the story. The world is amazingly well built. The art is a great fit for the story, being appealingly funny when the story is funny and creepily dark when the story calls for bad things to happen. I love Ballister, Ambrosius, and Nimona. The story is one of my favorites from here on out.
